Duties of the thesis tutors
Mentoring of the PhD program (Article 9 of the PhD Regulations).
The definitive admission of a doctoral student into a doctoral program involves the assignment of a tutor, designated by the corresponding CAPD. This is a professor assigned to the program with permanent links with the University and / or collaborating entity in the doctoral program.
In general, the tutor / a will work as:
- Ensure the interaction of the doctoral student with the CAPD and, jointly, with the thesis supervisor; and
- To ensure the adaptation to the lines of the program, the training and the research activity of the doctoral student.
The CAPD, once the doctorate has been heard, may modify the appointment of the tutor at any time during the period of completion of the doctorate, provided there are justified reasons.
In the event that a professor of the program meets the requirements to be a director and tutor, he will assume both functions, if applicable.
The tutoring work will be recognized as part of the teaching and research dedication of the teaching staff.

Direction of the PhD thesis (Article 10 of the PhD Regulation).
Within a maximum of three months from enrollment, the CAPD will assign to each doctoral student a director or thesis supervisor. This person will be the person in charge of the coherence and suitability of the training activities, of the impact and novelty in his field of the thesis of the doctorate thesis and of the guide in the planning and its adaptation, if it is the case, to other projects and activities where the doctoral student is registered.
The thesis director can be any Spanish or foreign doctor, with accredited research experience, regardless of the university, center or institution where he or she provides services. For the purposes of this regulation, "accredited research experience" means compliance with any of the following requirements:
- At least, a six-year period (sexennium) of research activity evaluated by the Spanish National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activities (CNEAI) or, failing that, to demonstrate sufficient merits to guarantee the positive evaluation of a six-year period of research activity established by the CNEAI for each scientific field.
- Be in the last six years, researcher or principal investigator of a research project financed by a public call (excluding projects of the University own calls).
- Accredited authorship or co-authorship, in the last six years, of at least three publications in journals included in the Journal Citation Reports. In areas where this criterion is not applicable due to its tradition, it will be replaced by a comparable requirement as established by the CNEAI in these scientific fields.
- Proof of authorship or co-authorship of a patent in exploitation.
- Have directed a doctoral thesis in the last five years with the cum laude qualification, originating, at least, a publication in journals indexed in the ISI-JCR or any other contribution of its equivalent in its scientific field according to the criteria of the CNEAI.
The program will assign a tutor who meets the requirements established in article 9 of the regulations of the document, in the event that the director does not have permanent links with the University or collaborating entity of the program or is not a teacher of the program.
The CAPD, once the doctoral student has been heard, may modify the appointment of the thesis supervisor at any time during the period of completion of the doctorate, provided justified reasons are present.
The thesis can be co-directed by a maximum of two people, when there are reasons of an academic nature or when the thematic interdisciplinarity or the programs developed in national or international collaboration so justify it. In any case, the codirection must be previously authorized by the CAPD. Such authorization may be revoked later if, in the opinion of the CAPD, the co-direction does not benefit the development of the thesis.
In cases of thesis in joint or industrial doctorate may be an additional director to the maximum limit established, provided that it belongs to another university (cotutela) or company / institution (industrial doctorate).
The people who co-direct the theses must meet the same requirements as those established for the directors in these regulations.
The management work or co-direction of the thesis will be recognized as part of the teaching and research dedication of the teaching staff.
